Here, the words are random, casual, disorganised musings1. Updates are infrequent, and unplanned. This is the closest on this site to a blog; it is not a blog.

You want essays if you want something coherent and potentially deep. You want fieldnotes if you need a gentler step from words to essays.

The easiest (and laziest) way to keep up with all this is just to use RSS. Yes, it’s safe and boring and it works2.

This is the very first post made to this site. Hopefully we do something useful with this log. Or not. We are not a performing monkey.

  1. Am I capable of such things? Random, yes; casual, yes; disorganized, hell no. Even the most random and loosey-goosey casual stuff is assembled with the precision of somebody playing Tetris; the weirdly-shaped multi-colored pieces can fit together when gently nudged. If you object to ending a sentence with a verb, you will need somebody to hold your hand because these words are just the first level; the fieldnotes are level two; the essays are level three. The scale is not linear but exponential. ↩︎

  2. There is a point in life when you realize that safe and boring and it works is the ultimate engineering flex. Sure, when you are young and enthusiastic and full of energy you embrace the whole move fast and break things, because it feels like you have achieved something. The reality is you are running around like Wile E. Coyote in a Warner Bros cartoon, and the Road Runner has outsmarted you, yet again. You become a senior engineer when you realize this, not when you have reached a simple five-year milestone. Anybody who considers themself a senior engineer just because they have reached that milestone is a shallow and vapid idiot who should never be let near a compiler. ↩︎
